In a jointly completed thesis, each individual students’ independent contribution to the research process must be described in such a way that it can be assessed.  (Education Regulations of the UEF 35 § https://kamu.uef.fi/en/tietopankki/students-rights-and-obligations/education-regulations/).  It is recommended that the thesis is related to the School’s expert areas of research, or an ongoing research project. The master thesis can be reported as a monograph or an article. Writing an article-based thesis requires the supervisor’s consent. In the article-based master’s thesis, the student independently prepares a concise and appropriately defined research report that follows the structure and reporting guidelines of the scientific research article. A master's thesis in article form can later be refined into a publishable scientific article in cooperation with the supervisor and/or other authors. A thesis can be accepted as a thesis even if the student does not submit it for evaluation in a scientific series. The article-based thesis must include abstract and keywords. The work can be written in English or in a language agreed in advance with the supervisor. If the thesis is written in a language other than English, the abstract and keywords are written in the language of the thesis. It is possible to add separate appendices to the article-based master’s thesis to supplement the data analysis process, data samples, or data collection questions. According to the guidelines about research integrity, the necessary appendices related to data collection must also be attached to the article-based master’s thesis. An article-based master’s thesis can be written individually or in pairs. The author of the thesis is the first author of the article.  The article-based master’s thesis is recommended especially when the master’s thesis is completed by participating in a research group or project.
