Learning outcomes
After completing the course, you can
- recognise the scientific publication process in your field of study and use the most important book databases and journal article databases as well as other relevant academic information sources
- utilise the opportunities of open science in information retrieval
- conceptually analyse your search topic, prepare search queries, perform searches and evaluate the search results
- use information resources ethically and legally. You acknowledge the user rights and avoid plagiarism
- recognise similarities and differences of scientific and vocational information retrieval and sources
- as from 1 August 2025: recognise the possibilities and limitations of artificial intelligence in information retrieval
The course develops the following generic competences: academic learning skills, information retrieval skills, evaluation of information sources, critical literacy and evaluation, problem-solving skills and development of expertise.
Content
- Basics of scientific publishing and copyright
- Analysis of search topic and search query formulation
- Introduction to subject-specific databases and other sources of scholarly information
- Introduction to systematic information retrieval.
Modes of study
Participation in lectures and online studying.
Evaluation criteria: Final assignment.
As from 1 August 2023, the library courses cannot be partly accredited through RPL.

Target group: Primarily for students of International Master's Degree Programs in Faculty of Science and Forestry (other than computer science) in Joensuu Campus. Exchange students are able to participate if there is vacancy.
Grading scale
0-5
Assessment criteria, pass/fail
Grade 1-5: Final assignment shows that the student is able to use the given databases correctly and is able to find relevant scientific publications on their own topic. More detailed criteria in Moodle. Fail: Student does not understand how to use the given databases and is not able to find relevant scientific publications about her/his own topic.
