Learning outcomes
After completing the study unit, the student
• understands concepts and perspectives underlying the diversity in educational settings,
• can apply theoretical knowledge in observing the learners' cultural diversity from different perspectives,
• can recognize and value cultural diversity and its significance in education, training, pedagogical activities, human encounters in work communities, as well as in individuals and their behaviours,
• can distinguish the factors that transmit and create culture in education and training,
• recognizes the significance of pedagogical activity for developing the cooperation and mutual understanding between the individuals,
• can evaluate the significance of shared expertise in operational environments of education.
Content
Diversity education. Multicultural education. Intercultural sensitivity. Learning culture and teaching culture. Teacher collaboration. Cultural traditions and diversity encounters in education. Communication styles in various cultures. Values underlying teacher-student relationships in various cultures.
Modes of study
Contact teaching during the two contact weeks in Joensuu (incl. lectures, workshops etc.), web-based learning assignments before and after the contact weeks
Learning assignments before the contact weeks 20h; lessons during contact weeks 80h (lectures, workshops, seminars, panel discussion, excursions) + working outside the lessons individually and in teams 15h learning assignments 20h
Arviointiperusteet / Evaluation criteria
Active participation in the activities of the contact study weeks in Joensuu: fail/pass;
Learning assignments: 0-5
Teaching methods
Classroom teaching, discussions, group work, excursions and web-based assignments
Further information
The course is aimed at Finnish and international Master’s level students of Education in particular. Bachelor and Doctoral level students are also welcome given that they have a suitable background related to the field of education. Applicants from around the world are welcome.
